"A Colored Man Round the World" was written by the former slave David F. Dorr, and published in 1858; it is a unique travel narrative of Dorr when he accompanied the Louisiana plantation owner Cornelius Fellowes on a visit of the world's major cities. The planter had promised that when they returned to America, Dorr would be freed from slavery. However, when the slave owner did not keep his promise, Dorr escaped to Ohio where he wrote this book of his travels. The authors narrative is noteworthy because of its unique perspective on the 1850s from the point of view of an American slave and also for the interesting sidelights it casts on European, Middle Eastern, and American history, including racial and national identity issues.
